When clients present with a tight and sore spot in their body, the cause is not always clear. What can be revealed as the potential cause are the tiny unconscious movements we make during the day that often go unnoticed.
For example, do you have a colleague that you turn to throughout the day? Or do you sit on one side of the couch, leaning your body in a certain way and then hold your phone in the other hand? Or when you do the dishes, or cook, do you stand with more weight going onto one leg than the other?
When we move or sit in a certain way, we favour and activate certain muscle groups that over time can become tight and sore.
Recently I noticed that after being on my laptop at home, my right hand was getting tight. I tuned into to notice what was going on, and saw that unconsciously hold up my right little finger when I type. So now when I type and catch my finger up, I take a breath, relax the hand and it falls back into line with the other fingers.
One of the many benefits of massage is that it connects you to your body. It can tune you into those spots that are tight and sore and invites you to look at how you are living and moving. So next time you feel tension in your body, start noticing the smaller movements or positions you find yourself in and see if it’s connected.
